In 2008, Jeffrey Epstein, a wealthy businessman, was convicted of sexually abusing a minor. It is speculated that he abused over 30 girls on his private island. Lolita Express is based on the accounts of these victims and is the second iteration of Capsized, the play developed at Brown/Trinity Rep. Lolita Express is an exploration of choice, luxury, sexual abuse, and memory. It follows 5 teenaged girls and one child of 9 as they cope with a life of sex slavery. Although the film centers on an experience of trauma, Lolita Express is full of joy, laughter and love. It is about young women finding beauty in horrible circumstances and finding the power and courage to protect each other. It is a love letter to survivors.
“Joy is a mystery because it can happen anywhere, anytime, even under the most unpromising circumstances, even in the midst of suffering, with tears in its eyes…" - Frederick Buechner
